BWDB Signs Consultancy Contract for Coastal Embankment Project
Consulting firm Royal HaskoningDHV has signed a six-year contract on Dec 20, 2014 to assist the government of Bangladesh with the protection of its coastal regions that are particular vulnerable to climate change risks.
Coastal
protection
As
a result of climate change and climate variability, the coastal
population in Bangladesh is facing intrinsic risks, risks that
include cyclones and storm surges, river bank erosion and vulnerability
of islands and chars, sea level rise, saline water intrusion,
and coastal river erosion. Sarafat Hossain Khan, Project Director
of the Bangladesh Water Development Board, explains the risks:
"A recent study indicated that if a 10 year return period
cyclone hit our coastal area today, about 8 million people will
be affected by inundation depths greater than 3 metres."
In
order to protect its most vulnerable coastal zone, the Bangladesh
Water Development Board has signed a €10.5 million contract
with engineering and project management consulting firm Royal
HaskoningDHV to provide engineering consultancy services.

Railway's Land Project Moves Ahead
Bangladesh
Railway took up a project in 2007 for a computerized database of
its land and Landuse Perspective/Master Plan for next 20-30 years.
Sheltech Consultants (Pvt.) Limited in association with DPM Consultants
Limited has been assigned for this GOB-funded consultancy. From
beginning, the project started facing challenges for lack of access
to available land documents and had limited progress. Since early
2013, the Project started making headway; and moving steadily towards
a satisfactory completion by December 2014.
Once
completed, BR Land Information System (LIS) will provide a live,
up to date and secure database for its use. LIS will consist of
six data sets: Satellite Images, Land Acquisition Plans, Mouza,
survey maps & features, current Landuse Map and proposed Landuse
Plans. The data sets will have digitized version of available land
documents (LA Plan, Mouza and Khatian), GIS-based map showing BR
right of way and existing lands in possession, present & planned
landuse. LIS will allow BR to produce Maps and Reports as needed.
